A Bagster and a roll-off dumpster both get debris off your property, but they suit different jobs. A Bagster is a single soft bag you buy at a store and pay WM (Waste Management) to collect. A roll-off dumpster is a steel container a local operator drops off and picks up. The right choice comes down to how much you're throwing out, how heavy it is, where the container can sit and what the whole job costs. If you're also weighing a crew that does the lifting for you, first compare self-loading rental with hired hauling.

Step 1: Compare the Two Container Types

Bagster bag Roll-off dumpster
What it is Fold-up woven bag with lifting straps Open-top steel container
Where you get it Bought at a retailer, collected by WM Delivered and collected by a local operator
Sizes One size: 8 ft long, 4 ft wide, 2.5 ft tall Several sizes; the range depends on your location
Capacity 3 cubic yards per bag Set by the size you book (see dumpster sizes)
Who sets the rules WM's terms for your ZIP or postal code Your local operator's written terms

Step 2: Check Capacity and Material Fit

Start with what's going out. Volume and weight rule out one option faster than anything else.
Question Bagster Roll-off dumpster
How much space? 3 cubic yards; bigger jobs need more bags and more collections Choose a size that fits the whole job in one container
How much weight? Up to 3,300 lb per bag, according to WM A weight allowance set by the operator; ask for it in writing
Heavy debris (dirt, brick, rock, sod, concrete) No more than one cubic yard per bag, per WM Often accepted with size or fill limits; tell the operator before you load
Yard waste Not accepted in all areas, per WM Ask your operator
Hazardous items Not accepted Not accepted; see the household hazardous waste rules
A single room, a small garage clear-out or one bathroom tear-out may fit in one bag. A whole-house cleanout, a roof or a project with concrete or soil often won't.

Step 3: Compare the Loading Effort

Both are self-loading: you do the lifting. The difference is how careful the loading has to be.
  • Bagster: WM asks you to load flat and heavy items first, fill as evenly as possible and roll the sides up as it fills. The lifting straps must still connect above the load, and you can't move the bag once you've started filling it.
  • Roll-off dumpster: rigid steel sides hold their shape, so you can carry or toss debris in. Load evenly and keep everything below the top edge so it can be hauled safely. Our tips on loading a dumpster cover the order to load in.

Step 4: Check Access and Placement

Placement is often what decides it. WM collects a Bagster with a crane, so the bag has stricter clearance rules than a roll-off.
Requirement Bagster (per WM) Roll-off dumpster
Reach Center of the bag within 16 ft of where the truck parks Delivery truck needs a clear path to the drop spot
Clearance 18 ft overhead; 5 ft from structures, fences, trees and vehicles Overhead space for the truck to tilt and unload; agree the spot with the operator
Location On your property only Driveway or agreed spot on your property; street placement may need a permit
Surface protection Not stated Bin There Dump That bins are set on protective boards
Before you book either one, check the places a dumpster shouldn't go.

Step 5: Request Equivalent Total Costs

The two are priced differently, so compare the total for the whole job, not the sticker price of one bag.
Cost line Bagster Roll-off dumpster
Container Bag price × number of bags Rental price for the size you need
Collection WM collection fee × number of bags (set by ZIP or postal code) Ask if delivery and pickup are included
Weight Bag limits; overloaded bags may not be collected and fees may apply Weight allowance and the charge above it
Time No rental clock; collection typically within five business days of your ready date Included days and the cost of keeping it longer
Extra fees Failed collection, damaged bag, prohibited items Prohibited items, overfilling, relocation
Total
Use WM's ZIP lookup for the Bagster lines and a written quote for the dumpster lines. Our dumpster rental prices page explains what a Bin There Dump That quote covers.

Step 6: Choose by Project Requirements

A Bagster tends to fit when A roll-off dumpster tends to fit when
The job fits in one or two bags The job is bigger than two or three bags
The debris is light: household junk, light yard waste There's concrete, soil, brick, shingles or other heavy debris
The spot meets WM's clearance rules Overhead wires, trees or a privacy fence block a crane
You don't know when you'll finish You need pickup on a set date
WM collects at your address Bagster collection isn't offered where you live
If the Bagster looks like the right fit, check Bagster collection eligibility at your address before you buy the bag. If the job is bigger, heavier or on a deadline, a roll-off dumpster rental is the Bagster alternative that handles it in one container. Ready for your dumpster rental?
