To dispose of an old mattress, first check its condition, then confirm a local donation, recycling or collection option before moving it. A usable mattress still needs approval from the recipient. A worn or damaged mattress needs a receiving facility or hauler that accepts it in that condition.

Compare Your Mattress Disposal Options

Choose a route by mattress condition, transport and loading needs. Confirm local acceptance before booking.
Option When to check it Confirm first
Donation or direct reuse The mattress is usable and a recipient wants it. Condition criteria, mattress type and pickup or drop-off arrangements.
Mattress recycling You want a recycling route and can reach a participating facility or arrange collection. Eligibility, accepted condition, unit limits, fees and transport.
Municipal collection Your waste service lists mattresses among accepted oversized items. Your address’s service rules, collection date, set-out point and wrapping.
Retailer removal You are buying a replacement mattress. Removal availability, condition restrictions, access and any extra charge.
Hired removal You need someone to collect the mattress, with loading help if agreed. Acceptance, labor, stairs, pickup window and total written price.
Dumpster or bin rental The mattress is part of a larger cleanout. Local operator and facility approval, loading arrangements and any mattress surcharge.

If you are clearing several kinds of waste, compare the waste disposal options for your whole project. Then return to the acceptance checks for your mattress.

1. Assess the Mattress Before Choosing a Route

Record the mattress type, size and condition. Count mattresses and box springs separately so the recipient or provider can assess the complete load. Tell them about stains, moisture, odors, damage or suspected pests before arranging transport.

  • Usable: ask a potential recipient about their acceptance criteria before offering it for reuse.
  • Worn or damaged: check recycling and disposal acceptance for that condition.
  • Wet, moldy or pest affected: disclose the problem and obtain handling instructions from the selected provider.

Appearance alone does not establish donation eligibility. Avoid leaving the mattress outside while you research options; exposure to rain can change the condition you described.

2. Check Donation Eligibility Before Offering a Mattress

Contact the local charity, furniture bank or other recipient directly. Ask, “Do you accept used mattresses of this type and in this condition?” Send clear photos if requested, and confirm that acceptance covers both the mattress and any box spring.

A charity’s furniture donation service does not establish mattress acceptance. Habitat for Humanity directs donors to check their local ReStore’s donation criteria. Some stores provide recycling instead of reuse. Habitat ReStore’s Oakland and Concord mattress recycling information describes drop-off recycling. Those stores do not accept mattress donations or offer mattress recycling pickups. That policy applies to those locations.

If you give the mattress directly to another person, describe its condition honestly and agree on collection. Do not label a mattress that is damaged or affected by pests as suitable for reuse.

3. Find a Mattress Recycling Program Near You

United States

The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program operates in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. Use its finder for collection sites and recycling facilities, then contact the chosen site about eligibility, hours, unit limits and acceptance.

The program’s acceptance rules require consumers to be based in the state of disposal. The mattress or box spring must also have been used in that state. Covered mattress types also differ: futon mattresses that separate from their frame or base qualify only in California, and crib mattresses qualify only in Connecticut. For covered items, participating sites in California and Oregon accept all conditions. Connecticut and Rhode Island specify recyclable condition. If your unit is heavily soiled, damaged or affected by pests, contact the receiving site before travelling. Confirm the rules for your item. A free drop-off does not establish free pickup or transport.

Outside these states, check your municipal waste website and a local mattress recycler for available routes and charges. A listing in a directory is a starting point; the receiving facility must confirm acceptance.

Canada

Start with your city or regional waste authority. Canadian municipal arrangements differ. Vancouver’s mattress recycling page lists paid transfer station or landfill drop-off and private collection options. Check the linked facility limits and fees before travelling. This is a Vancouver example, not a rule for every Canadian municipality.

Keep the mattress intact unless the receiving facility expressly asks for a different preparation method. Do not cut it apart simply to fit more into a load.

4. Compare Municipal Pickup With Hired Removal

Look for “mattress,” “oversized items” or “bulky waste” on your waste service’s official website. Check rules for your property type: a house, apartment building and commercial property may use different collection arrangements. If you rent, ask the building manager about the designated collection point.

For homes receiving City garbage collection, Toronto lists mattresses and box springs for collection of oversized items beside the garbage bin on garbage collection day. An annual service fee applies. Toronto’s arrangement does not establish pickup rules elsewhere.

If you cannot transport the mattress yourself, check municipal collection, retailer removal or hired pickup. Confirm carrying help if you need it.

If municipal collection does not suit your needs, ask a hired removal provider to price the complete job. State the number of items, their condition, floor level, stairs, parking and access. Get clear agreement on who carries the mattress out of the home and who loads it.

If you are ordering a new mattress, ask the retailer about removal of the old mattress before checkout. Confirm that the service covers your address and the condition of the old mattress; keep any removal charge in your comparison.

When a Dumpster or Bin Rental May Fit

For a larger cleanout, find your local Bin There Dump That operator and ask about mattress acceptance before renting. Give the operator the mattress count, sizes, condition and other waste in the project. Ask for confirmation of receiving facility restrictions, loading limits and any separate mattress charge.

Do not treat a container’s nominal volume as a guaranteed mattress count. Confirm the loading plan and labor arrangements rather than assuming that delivery includes carrying items out of your home.

5. Confirm Wrapping, Fees and Collection Conditions

Ask the selected provider for preparation instructions before moving the mattress. Confirm any required bag, seal, label or set-out timing. If there are suspected bed bugs, tell the provider first and follow its local handling rules.

Toronto requires mattresses with bed bugs to be completely wrapped in plastic for scheduled collection. Vancouver gives wrapping, sealing and labeling instructions for mattresses with bed bugs and makes their recycling acceptance conditional on the level of contamination. These are local requirements, not a universal acceptance promise.

Ask where the mattress will go; collection alone does not confirm recycling. Compare the full written cost, including pickup or delivery, loading help, charges for mattresses and box springs, access costs and any disposal fee. For rental quotes, also confirm the rental period, weight allowance, collection arrangements and charges for an unsuitable or overloaded load. A drop-off option with no charge can still require your own transport.

6. Book Mattress Collection or Drop-Off

Illustration: gather item, access and date details before confirming the booking and full price.

Before booking, use this checklist:

  • Confirm acceptance for the mattress type and disclosed condition.
  • List every mattress and box spring in the booking.
  • Record the address, date, collection window or facility opening hours.
  • Agree on loading labor, access and transport. Arrange carrying help before moving the mattress if you need it.
  • Obtain the total price and any conditions that could change it.
  • Check the wrapping, labeling and set-out requirements.
  • Save a contact number in case the provider cannot collect or accept the item.

Keep the confirmation and follow the agreed preparation instructions. Do not put the mattress at the curb before checking the permitted timing and collection point.

If the job also includes furniture or other large items, plan how to remove oversized household items. Confirm acceptance for each item rather than extending the mattress approval to the whole load.

Mattress Disposal Questions

Where can I dispose of a mattress near me?

Check your municipal waste website for mattress collection or drop-off, then compare a local recycler, retailer removal and hired pickup. Contact the selected provider before travelling or setting the mattress out.

Can I donate a used mattress?

Only after the intended recipient confirms that it accepts your mattress type and condition. Do not assume that a national charity name establishes the policy at your local branch.

Is mattress disposal free?

Check the specific program and service. Some eligible drop-offs have no charge, but pickup, transport, unsuitable condition or additional items may have separate costs. Ask for the full price before booking.

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Get approval from the local rental operator for the mattress and the receiving facility’s rules before loading it. Confirm any surcharge and loading restrictions in the quote.

Local examples and program information checked 5 October 2026. Confirm current acceptance, charges and collection instructions with your chosen provider.

Watch Our Mattress Disposal Video

This company video gives a general overview. Confirm acceptance with the specific charity before offering a mattress; good condition alone does not establish eligibility. The Oakland and Concord ReStores cited above accept mattresses for recycling, not donation. For a dumpster rental, confirm mattress acceptance, who carries and loads it, and the full local price. Follow the current wrapping and preparation instructions above.
