Restricted items found in a bin have to be pulled out before the load can go to the landfill. If you’re not sure about something, call (719) 686-8613 before you load it.

Why some items are restricted

Why these items can’t go in a dumpster

It isn’t our rule alone. Most restrictions come from state law, federal refrigerant rules and what landfills can safely accept.

Colorado law

Electronics are banned from landfills

Colorado’s Electronic Recycling Jobs Act (SB12-133) has banned landfill disposal of TVs, computers, monitors, printers, tablets, DVD players, stereos and game consoles since July 1, 2013. They have to be recycled.

Refrigerants

Fridges, freezers and AC units hold refrigerant

The refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician before the appliance is scrapped, so these go to an appliance recycler instead of a landfill.

Fire & chemical risk

Some items can ignite, leak or poison

Batteries, propane, paint, fuels and chemicals can start fires in a truck or at the landfill, or leak into the ground. They go to hazardous waste drop-offs built to handle them.
