Two tons. That is what every bin includes, regardless of size. Most people assume a bigger dumpster comes with a bigger weight allowance, and that assumption is behind most overage charges. Here is what 2 tons actually looks like, which materials get you there, and what happens if you go over.
How Much Weight Is Included?
2 tons — 4,000 pounds — on every size. Going from a 10 to a 20 gives you twice the volume and exactly the same tonnage.
That sounds like a limitation until you look at what people actually throw away. For household cleanouts, brush and most renovation debris, you will fill the bin to the rail well before you reach 4,000 pounds. The allowance is generous for light material and tight for dense material, which is why the type of debris matters more than the size of the job.
What Happens If I Go Over?
$100 per ton, prorated. Prorated is the important word — there is no penalty threshold and no flat surcharge. Go 400 pounds over and you pay for 400 pounds.
What you cannot do is overfill the bin above the rail. A load stacked over the top cannot legally be transported, so we cannot take it. That is not a fee, it is a failed pickup, and it is the one outcome worth actually avoiding.

Why Does Roofing Weigh So Much?
A square of asphalt shingles — 100 square feet — weighs somewhere in the range of 250 pounds, and that is for a single layer. Colorado Springs roofs frequently have two, sometimes three. Hail season runs May through August along the Front Range and full tear-offs spike right behind it, so this comes up constantly.

How Do I Estimate the Weight of My Load?

Household and yard debris: stop thinking about weight. Pick a size based on volume and you will be fine.
Mixed renovation debris: usually fine, but watch for tile, mortar bed and old plaster. Those are the components that shift a remodel load from light to heavy.
